WEEK OF: OCTOBER 28th - NOVEMBER 1st, 2013

Attention Parents / Students:  You can now access our Reading and Math Books online.  Students were given a 4 digit access code to enter the Pearson Math and Reading Website.  To access the site click on the link to the left, enter the students username and password.  You can view our Math book lesson and interactive video.  There are games, Math tools, and lesson videos that students can view to assist in homework.


* In Grammar, we are focusing on “Common and Proper Nouns”.  A common noun names any person, place, or animal.  A proper noun names a special person, place, or animal and begins with a capital letter.  We will have a Grammar test on Tuesday 10/26/13.

* In Reading, we are reading the story “Penguin Chick”.  This story is an example of Expository Non-Fiction. * In Math, we will continue to work on Topic 3 concepts.  We will begin to  work with Subtraction on Three-digit Numbers.  We will subtract with place value blocks, using the expanded subtraction algorithm, as well as borrowing.  We will also have a fact quiz on Friday. 

* In Science, we will begin Investigation 3 (Water Vapor).  

*** Our Halloween Party will be Thursday 1:30-3:00 pm.  Costumes can be sent to school in a bag and students will get ready after lunch.

WEEK OF: October 21st - 25th, 2013



Red Ribbon Week



* In Spelling, our words include words with syllable patterns v/cv and vc/v.  Our list words include: finish, pilot, even, wagon, music, silent, rapid, female, lemon, pupil, focus, robot, tulip, camel, salad, resident, spinach, climate, tradition, and innocent.  Our pretest will be on Wednesday and final test Friday. * In Math, we are working on Topic 3 (Adding and Subtracting Three-digit Numbers).  We will add with place value blocks, using the expanded addition algorithm, as well as regrouping. We will also have a fact quiz on adding 2 on Friday. 

 

* In Science, our quiz on  Investigation 2 (Hot and Cold)has been moved to Wednesday.

WEEK OF: October 14th - 18th, 2013


NO SCHOOL MONDAY 10/14 or FRIDAY 10/18


**Reading --- Next week we will be taking our End of the Unit Benchmark Test.  This test consists of  stories and comprehension questions focusing on the skills we have been covering the past few weeks. We will also be watching the movie March of the Penguins to prepare for our next story Penguin Chick.
** Spelling --- We will be taking a Unit Review Test on Thursday 10/17.  The test will be made up of words we have already learned from the past 4 Spelling lists.  There will be NO pretest seeing as these are words we have already tested.   
** Grammar --- We will review on Tuesday and Wednesday for a Unit Review Test that will be on Thursday 10/17.  The test will have questions on identifying Sentences, the 4 types of Sentences, Subject/Predicate, and Compound Sentences.
**Math --- Tuesday we will begin our next topic in Math.  Topic 3 is more Addition and Subtraction but of 3-4 digit numbers. 
**Science --- We have finished up Investigation 2 Hot/Cold Water and will be reviewing and possibly taking our next test on Thursday 10/17.

WEEK OF: October 7th - 11th, 2013


 

* In Spelling, our words include the vowel sounds that you hear in out and toy.  Our list words are: proud, shower, hour, amount, voyage, choice, avoid, thousand, prowl, employ, bounce, poison, annoy, appoint, broil, however, mountain, coward, turmoil, and chowder. * In Grammar, we are focusing on “Compound Sentences”. A compound sentence contains two sentences joined by a comma and a word such as and, but, or or. The two sentences that are joined make sense together. We will have a Grammar quiz on Wednesday 10/9/13.

 

* In Reading, we have started our new story “My Rows and Piles of Coins”.  In our story, our main character Saruni helps his mother sell her goods at the market every Saturday. After each day of sales, she gives him a few coins to spend on anything he wants. But Saruni has a dream of helping his mother by buying a bicycle to take her goods to market. He saves his coins each week while he learns to ride a bicycle. He saves for months, and, with the help of his mother and father, finally gets his bike. As soon as he has it, he comes up with a new plan to help her. * In Math, we will have a Topic 2 test on Thursday 10/10. It will cover Lessons 2-1 to 2-9. We will review before the test and the students will bring home a review guide so they can prepare for the test. The review guide will come home Wednesday.  

 

* In Science, we continue to work on Investigation 2 (Hot and Cold) in our unit on Water.
