WEEK OF: October 27th - 31st, 2014

**If you did not return your forms for a Parent/Teacher Conference  and would like to schedule a  time please return forms as soon as possible.    Conference times are scheduled as we receive your forms. 

*** Next week is Red Ribbon Week.  Our theme is "Love Yourself, Be drug free!"

Monday - Sock it to drugs day - wear crazy socks

Thursday - Hairs to a drug free life - crazy hair

**Reading—We have completed the first Unit and will be working on the Unit 1 Benchmark Test next week.  We will be taking a different section Monday, Tuesday, and Wed. On Thursday we will begin watching The March of the Penguins. This will prepare us for our next story entitled Penguin Chick.     

**Spelling—We will be reviewing words from all 5 Spelling lists that we have covered so far.  We will be taking a Unit Test on Thursday 10/30.  

**Grammar—We will be reviewing all topics that we have covered in our first unit next week.  We will have a Unit Review Test on Thursday 10/30.

**Math –Subtraction is our focus for next week.  We will work through lesson 3-8 to 3-10 and then take a Subtraction Test on Friday 10/31. It won’t be Frightening so Don’t be Scared!!!

**Science—So far we have discussed technology, work, and machines. Lesson 3 is all about the Design Process.  This is the last lesson in Chapter 2 so be sure to study vocab when it is assigned.

WEEK OF: October 20th - 25th, 2014

**Reading—We will continue with our story My Rows and Piles of Coins next week.  We will be testing the Vocab/Story on Thursday 10/23 and the Skill Test will be on Friday 10/24.    

 **Spelling—Today we took a Pretest of our words with Long Vowel Dipthongs  spelled ou, ow; oi, oy. We will do corrections on Monday and take the Final test  on Tuesday  10/21..  

 **Grammar—Our Quiz on  Compound Sentences will be on Wednesday 10/22.

**Math –We have been working on Addition using Expanded Form, Place Value Blocks, and the usual way to add digits vertically.  We also worked on adding 3 or more numbers.  We will be working on Word Problems next week and will take an Addition Quiz on Wednesday 10/22.    

**Science—We have been working on the design process this week by designing and creating a parachute.  We have discussed technology and will continue to discover more about how technology can affect our lives.  Next week we will begin to discuss work and different types of machines.

WEEK OF: October 13th - 17th, 2014

**Reading—We will begin our next story called My Rows and Piles of Coins next week.  This is an example of Realistic Fiction.  Realistic Fiction is a made-up story that has charcters, a setting, and events that seem real. The skills with this story are Author’s Purpose and Story Structure.  

 

**Spelling—The new list is made up of Long Vowel Dipthongs  spelled ou, ow; oi, oy.  We will take a Pretest on Friday 10/17.  

 

**Grammar—We will be learning about the differences between Simple and Compound Sentences next week.

 

**Math –We are moving on to Topic 3 : Using Place Value to Add and Subtract.  We will be discussing different ways to add 3-digit numbers and adding 3 or more digits.   

 

**Science—Chapter 2 is titled Technology and The Design Process.  We will be discussing technology and machines with this Chapter.

**FRIDAY 10/10 Early Dismissal

**Book Fair Shopping next week on the day of your child’s scheduled Library Class. 

**Reading — We will continue working with the story Supermarket next week.  Vocab and Story test will be on Wed. 10/8 and Skill Test will be on Thurs. 10/9.  We will start the next story  My Rows and Piles of Coins when we return to school on the 10/14.

**Grammar and Spelling – We will be working on Journal writing and doing a Writing Prompt during Grammar and Spelling next week.

**Math –  We have completed Topic 2 and will be reviewing on Monday and Tuesday next week.  The Topic 2 Test will be on Wed. 10/8.  We will begin working on subtraction facts and have a Timed Fact Assessment on Friday.   

**Science— Chapter 1 is finally complete.  We will review and be taking our first Science Test on Friday 10/10.  Students should study vocab and review Study Guide to prepare.
